Responsible Use

We review AI companion platforms because we think they're a legitimately interesting kind of entertainment — and we recommend the good ones. But a site that rates memory systems on how convincingly a character "remembers you" owes its readers one honest page about what that convincingness is, and isn't. This is that page.

It's entertainment — treat it that way

An AI companion is software. The warmth is generated, the memory is a database, and the relationship — however good the writing gets — runs in one direction. That doesn't make it worthless; nobody calls a novel worthless for being fiction. But it does mean an AI girlfriend is a complement to a life with real people in it, not a replacement for one. If you notice sessions displacing friends, sleep, or things you used to enjoy, that's the signal to pull back.

Set your boundaries before you start

  • Time: decide up front what a normal session looks like for you, and notice when reality drifts from it. These products are built to be engaging; a deliberate stopping point beats willpower in the moment.
  • Money: pick a monthly budget and stick to it. The coin model makes small purchases feel small, and photos, videos, and calls add up faster than expected — our pricing breakdown has the real per-item costs so you can budget with open eyes. The free tier exists; use it to decide whether the product is for you before any money moves.
  • Honesty with yourself: if you're using an AI companion to avoid something painful rather than to enjoy something fun, the app isn't the problem — but it isn't the solution either.

It is not mental-health care

An AI character can feel like a sympathetic listener, and there's nothing wrong with venting to one. But it is not a therapist, it has no professional judgment, and it cannot help you in a crisis. If you're dealing with loneliness that hurts, depression, anxiety, or substance use, talk to a human being who is trained for it. In the United States, these two are free, confidential, and available right now:

SAMHSA.gov — the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Free, confidential help finding treatment and support for mental health and substance use, 24/7, in English and Spanish.

CrisisTextLine.org — free, 24/7 support by text message with a trained crisis counselor. If you're struggling right now, this is a real person who will answer.

Reaching out to either of these is not an overreaction. It's what they're for.

Adults only

Every platform we review, including HeyGF AI, is for adults aged 18 and over — the platforms enforce it and so do we. This site's content is written for adults, and our safety guide covers how the platform itself handles age gating and content policy.

The bottom line

Used with a clear head, an AI companion is a fun, sometimes surprisingly engaging piece of entertainment. Used to fill a hole that people or professional care should fill, it will quietly make that hole bigger. Enjoy it for what it is — and keep the rest of your life bigger than it.
